Isabel Cuadros, M.D., is a psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of child abuse. She is currently Executive Director and Honorary Chairman of the Asociación Afecto contra el Maltrato Infantil (Afecto Association against Child Maltreatment), and a consultant to the Catholic International Bureau for Childhood BICE and Save the Children. Dr. Cuadros received her medical and psychiatry degree from Universidad del Valle, Cali-Colombia.
Dr. Cuadros’ consultant work reflects her belief that children around the world should have a childhood without maltreatment. In 2000, Dr. Cuadros was the coordinator of the research study, “Situation of Children in Relation to Child Maltreatment in the Sub-region of South America” for Save the Children-UK and Asociación Afecto. She also conducted research for Save the Children on the situation of children in relation to maltreatment and sexual abuse in Latin America, and provided training to the Supreme Court of Justice of El Salvador on the approach to child maltreatment in 2001. And she was a guest professor for the Pre-Conference Course on Prevention of Child Maltreatment at the 2nd National Conference of the Psychiatry Association of El Salvador.
Dr. Cuadros joined ISPCAN in 1997, has presented papers at several ISPCAN conferences, was a key force in hosting ISPCAN’s 9th Latin American Regional Conference in Bogotá, Colombia, July 17-19, 2007, and has been a Country Project Leader for the International Training Program of ISPCAN (ITPI) since 2004. She also was a guest speaker twice at ISPCAN’s Global Institute, hosted by the Children’s Hospital of San Diego, California.
Among the awards Dr. Cuadros has received are the “Order of the Congress of Colombia" in the degree of “Cruz del Comendador,” in 1995, the Cafam Award to Women in 1997 and 1998, and the Héctor Abad Gómez Order of Merit by the Provincial Government of Antioquia, Colombia.
Dr. Cuadros has authored or co-authored many publications, including El Maltrato Infantil en Colombia, Alternativas de Solución (1994); “Serie Temas y Técnicas” in El Sistema de Vinculación Afectiva (1996), and Manual para la Detección de Casos de Maltrato a la Niñez (2000).
