Other roles at that hospital have included Chairman, Division of Medicine; Head, Child Protection Unit; and Director, Children's Assessment His early pediatric training included posts at St Mary’s Hospital in London; Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Throughout 1993, while on sabbatical, he was Acting Director of the C. Henry Kempe National Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect in Denver.
Kim has received numerous awards, including the Brandt Steele Award (1994), the Kempe Award (2000), and ISPCAN’s Distinguished Service Award (1998), as well as a range of other national and international awards, including Member of the Order of Australia.
In Australia, he has chaired the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), was the inaugural chair of the Commonwealth of Australia's National Council on the Prevention of Child Abuse and the inaugural Chair of the New South Wales Child Death Review Team. He has published widely in the field, particularly on the long-term effect of physical abuse, non-organic failure to thrive and sexual abuse. He has authored, co-authored, or edited 14 books, 52 other book chapters, and over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles on child protection, child development and other pediatric issues.
He currently is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Sydney, where he is undertaking a review of the University’s graduate medical program, including the medical curriculum and admission criteria.
