Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to attend the XVIth ISPCAN International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect which will take place from 3rd to 6th September 2006 in the City of York in the north of England. This Congress is being organised by the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect in collaboration with the British Association for the Study and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.

The speed of change in the modern world brings many new challenges for those working to protect children and safeguard their welfare. The title of the Congress, “Children in a Changing World: Getting It Right,” reflects the need to ensure that research, knowledge, policies, the shape of services and practice skills address these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities, as well as recognises the dangers and adverse consequences. An essential ingredient for a successful Congress is an attractive and enjoyable social programme. This Congress will take full advantage of the venue set in York, one of England’s most beautiful and historical cities.

This Congress will be the most significant and prestigious event addressing the protection of children to occur in the United Kingdom for many years. The academic programme will reflect the highest standards and provide an opportunity for those from all disciplines working at every stage of professional development to participate in sharing knowledge and experience and to learn from sources of expertise with highly regarded international reputations. Controversy, imagination and innovation will contribute to the quality of presentations and debates. We intend that this Congress will play a significant role in informing professionals on the future shape of services and the skills and knowledge base necessary to protect vulnerable children throughout the world.

The delegate fees are set at costs that will allow people at all levels within agencies to attend. We encourage you to put the dates in your calendars and begin planning now for attendance, participation and necessary funding. Please watch for more details and also consider submitting an abstract for presentation.

Yours sincerely,

David Spicer, LLB (BASPCAN)
Congress Co-Chair
