      What is the Huddle?

This special opportunity is available for ISPCAN members  & non-members to be part of a global grand rounds each year on a certain type of child abuse. Without bias, fear of being sued, and without the pressure of handling a live case, we take the time to lift up and do a 360-degree review to learn and re-frame the case with a public health lens.  How could we have been more effective?

This includes a series of weekly 2-hour sessions every Thursday in May that will be online small group learning. We will additionally hold an in person master class at the ISPCAN Congress 2025 in Vilnius.

We hope that you will be able to join an active learning experience to help us to reimagine the solutions with a public health lens.  Join all 5 sessions to get 3 CEUs.

      The Huddle Concept

The foundational pieces of cases examined in retrospect allow a much-needed review of what is working, what the outcomes for children are, and what the best practices for CPS system professionals are.

But ...we need to learn from our past and not keep making the same mistakes.

Welcome to the debut of our new learning concept for practitioners.

This special opportunity is available for ISPCAN members & non-members to experience a global grand rounds each year on a certain type of child abuse.  Without bias, fear of being sued, and without the pressure of handling a live case, we take the time to lift up and do a 360-degree review to learn.  For each sector in the response system to look at the case through the multi-disciplinary collaborative lens –so we can do better.

ISPCAN, along with our partners at Haruv Institute, and Kempe Center will coordinate a special, limited training.  For 150 participants, we will offer a unique opportunity to learn, network, and gain critical skills.  This first year we will take a case of child sexual abuse to examine from all angles. ISPCAN was founded by Henry Kempe, a pediatrician and visionary who worked for years treating children who were abused. He published the groundbreaking work, the “Battered Child Syndrome,” in which Dr. Kempe recognized that it was not a private family matter, but rather the community’s responsibility to protect child rights. Through his own medical practice he also concluded that child centered, optimal outcomes would be realized only through the dedication of diverse sectors. By creating a society, this special group of professionals would also be able to build a community of practice, research and support.

On July 7, 1977, the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) was established.  ISPCAN’s work embodies Henry Kempe’s desire that all of us working in the field never cease to ask difficult questions, to challenge ourselves to reach beyond what is possible and to strive for what is needed to protect children. We continue to adapt, evolve and progress with our global workforce to rise up to end child abuse.

Join us as we innovate and strive to do better.  We can huddle up to help develop guidance and resources for all our members globally to utilize, and to stay connected via our member portal and congresses to continue learning after the training.  Rise Up to End Child Abuse with us, so we can change the quality of the care provided to children.  Entire systems of care change, prevention and policy also improve when we take a public health approach.  So come Huddle Up with us, to get a game plan for how we tackle child abuse better.  Part 1 of the Huddle will be online with some asynchronous learning for some deep dives into key issues, and part 2 will be in person in Vilnius at the ISPCAN Congress in October 2025.

Year 1 Case: Child Sexual Abuse

Multigenerational child sexual abuse, in the context of culture, family and systems of care will be explored. How the medical, mental health, and justice systems interact to protect and heal the child will be deeply examined. From the eyes of the child, Sasha Joseph Neulinger, we will hear the case, as it unfolds using his home movies as he recreates and tells his story.

What we would have, could have, should have done-- so we can improve on each sectors response, and the multidisciplinary, collaborative response.

More child centered care, better outcomes.

Stay connected and help us develop international guidance and best practice for each sector and for the multidisciplinary case management for child sexual abuse.
