Once a child laborer in the mica mines, she didn’t know there was any other way. “I didn’t know it was wrong. I thought it was just life,” she says. The sheet of mica hiding her face speaks to a past that often kept children like her invisible. Now enrolled at one of the three public primary schools established through the FAMAHA 2 project—supported by Terre des Hommes Netherlands—Nekeny is reclaiming her future. She dreams of becoming a teacher “so that other children can learn early what I learned late.”
